More sustainable packaging

The packaging materials used in Hesburger restaurants are constantly being improved, making them more environmentally-friendly. For example, hamburger wrappers have been reduced in size and thickness over the years. Carefully selected packaging materials and methods prevent a considerable amount of unnecessary packaging waste each year. We use as little packaging material as possible and no longer use paperboard containers for burgers and children's meals. In addition to this, drinking straws and lids are no longer automatically provided with beverages. Straws have also been removed from the restaurants' condiment stations.

Hesburger has also worked together with its suppliers to find ways of reducing the amount of waste. Materials are continuously under development and Hesburger is constantly looking for new, more sustainable materials. Production waste is sorted and recycled wherever possible.

Compostable materials

Today, Hesburger hamburgers are always served in a wrapper. The environmentally-friendly, biodegradable coating gives the wrappers their moisture-resistance. French fries are also served in a biodegradeable bag.

Forest-friendly beverage cups

Hesburger's cold and hot beverage cups are PEFC-certified (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes). Forest certification ensures that forest management compliant with the standards of sustainable development is taken into consideration in the cup manufacturing process. The origin of wood raw material used in products can be traced all the way back to the forest. Cups are manufactured by Hesburger's long-time partner Huhtamäki Foodservice Finland Oy.

Due to the EU directive (2019/904/EU) that aims to cut down the use of single-use plastics, starting from the summer of 2021. The material of the cups is coated paper. The amount of coating will be reduced but the material will remain same.

Hesburger gave up plastic straws already in 2019. Hesburger started to use wooden cutlery in the restaurants during 2021. Read more about how Hesburger reduces plastic!
