LESS PLASTIC

It takes hundreds of years for plastic to decompose. This is why it is so important that existing plastics be re-used sensibly and practically. Hesburger collects over 10 tons of coloured plastic annually. Recycled coloured packaging plastics are turned into garbage bags for our restaurants.

Hesburger workwear is made of fabric containing recycled plastic bottles. When a uniform reaches the end of its useful life, it is recycled. Worn-out uniforms are turned into terrace tables for Hesburger restaurants, with a service life of up to 50 years. Even after that, the material can be reshaped for reuse.

Saying Goodbye to Plastic Lids

In 2025, Hesburger will switch to fibre lids. The new fibre lids are used for both cold and hot drinks. The lids are made entirely from renewable, certified natural fibre. Fibre lids can either be recycled as cardboard or can be composted in industrial plants and in households with their own compost. When you put the lids in for biowaste collection, first check the instructions of your local waste management company. By switching from plastic to fibre-based lids, we at Hesburger reduced out plastic use by 41,000 kg by the end of 2025 compared to 2024.

No More Plastic Straws

Hesburger completely phased out plastic straws in Finland in 2019. Hesburger now uses straws made without any glue or additives. They can be recycled as ordinary paper waste, and the material can be reused several times. The straws are manufactured in Finland, from Finnish wood fibre. Local production ensures quality and an environmentally friendly product.

Hesburger has been reducing the use of straws and lids for years: a straw and lid is only provided for soft drinks and other cold beverages upon request. Milkshakes, children’s drinks, and takeaway beverages still come with a straw. Straws have been completely removed from the condiment stations in dining areas.
