Furniture with Many Lives
Hesburger restaurants are furnished with solutions designed with responsibility in mind. Durable materials are selected, proven designs are used, wear & spare parts are made easy to replace. A large share of the furniture used in Hesburger restaurants, both in Finland and in all other countries where Hesburger operates, is manufactured by the Finnish furniture and lighting specialist Scale Up - It’s more than furnishing.
Circular‑economy principles guide the design process. The parts that wear out the fastest, such as table tops, sofa back cushions and stool seats, are replaceable. Metal components, such as cast‑iron table bases, are made largely from recycled metal. For surface finishing, powder coating is used as a more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional solvent‑based paints. In total, more than 27,000 kg of recycled metal has already been used in Hesburger’s table bases.
During transport, furniture and components are packed in recyclable materials such as corrugated cardboard, paper and recyclable plastic. Full truckloads are used to avoid unnecessary emissions from logistics.
Energy‑efficient lighting
All lighting fixtures supplied by Scale Up Oy Ltd to Hesburger comply with the EU’s EPREL energy‑efficiency requirements (https://eprel.ec.europa.eu/screen/home) and are based on low‑energy LED technology. Traditional, high‑consumption light sources are no longer used, and lighting is designed as an integral part of the restaurant’s overall interior.
Fixtures are delivered either with a ready‑installed energy‑efficient LED light source or in a form where Hesburger selects the appropriate LED solution on site. This ensures that both the required light output and the desired atmosphere can be achieved in each restaurant.
Material choices emphasize environmental responsibility: PVC has been replaced with ABS plastic, and in many fixtures more than half of the material is recyclable aluminum. LED technology reduces energy consumption and extends the lifespan of the fixtures, supporting both sustainability goals and long product life cycles.

Long‑term development work with Scale Up Oy Ltd continues step by step toward even more sustainable restaurant furniture. To withstand years of heavy use, furniture and lighting must not only be made from high‑quality materials but also be easy to clean, maintain and repair. Spare and replacement parts must be readily available. The goal is to further increase the share of recycled materials used in the production of both furniture and lighting.
