UNIFORMS MADE OF RECYCLABLE MATERIALS
In addition to their friendly smiles, Hesburger employees can be identified by their stylish uniforms. Recycled materials, sustainable manufacturing methods, and new apparel industry innovations were used in the uniform line introduced in 2018.
Hesburger's goal is that every piece of workwear and furniture tells a story about responsibility and saving resources. By recycling and reusing materials, we reduce the environmental load and build a more sustainable future.
Restaurant uniforms are subjected to a lot of wear and tear, so they need to be durable, comfortable, stylish, and safe. The environmental friendliness of uniforms is also just as important. Because we have thousands of employees, the impact of each uniform made using environmentally friendly methods is multiplied a thousandfold. Hesburger’s workwear is produced by Touchpoint Oy, a Finnish company specializing in ecological workwear. Hesburger and Touchpoint have been working together for more than a decade.
In 2024, the carbon dioxide emissions of Hesburger's workwear manufacturing amounted to 45.21 kg CO2e. Emissions have been significantly reduced by utilizing recycled materials, such as recycled polyester and textile industry cutting waste. By the end of 2022, recycled polyester had been used in Hesburger's workwear, saving 888,906 megajoules of energy, 832,427 litres of water and reducing CO2 emissions by 67,550 kg CO2e
Textile Industry Cutting Waste Put to Use
Instead of using new cotton fabric, Hesburger t-shirts and thermal jackets are made using clean, otherwise worthless textile waste from the textile industry. The textile waste is collected, re-fibred, and made into new clothing. The manufacturing of this material needs 99% less water than the manufacturing of products made of virgin material, and its CO2 emissions are about 50% lower. By the end of 2023, Hesburger’s T-shirts and thermal jackets had saved a total of 90,085,500 litres of water.
Hesburger employee T-shirts:
The T-shirts used by Hesburger employees are 100% recycled material, in which the cutting surplus left from fabric manufacturing is woven into a new material. The material is used as is, without chemical staining. There are 1,426 litres of water saved per t-shirt, and the shirts do not contain harmful chemicals. 90% of the energy used to make the T-shirt has been produced with renewable energy sources.
Collared shirts:
Part of the raw material used in making the collared shirts consists of an elastic, breathable knit fabric and recycled polyester manufactured from recyclable plastic bottles.
Jeans that can be recycled again:
The comfortable and well-fitted Hesburger work jeans are made of recycled cotton. Because there is less than 5% elastane in this material, it can be recycled yet again into a raw material. An enormous amount of water, chemical pesticides, and fertilizers are used in the production of cotton, thus putting a tremendous strain on the environment. By using recycled cotton in the manufacture of jeans—and by recycling them yet again into raw material—we conserve our planet’s resources.
The fabric of the jeans has STeP by OEKO-TEX® certification.
Belts from recycled materials:
The belts included in Hesburger uniforms are made from recycled polyester. The durability of the material makes it ideal for use in work uniforms. The metal belt buckles are recyclable.
Cool headwear:
Hesburger’s popular caps are made of recycled polyester. It takes 1.25 recycled plastic bottles to produce one cap. Our olive-green headscarf, which is printed with the Hesburger logo, is 80% recycled polyester and 20% cotton. It takes 1.5 recycled plastic bottles to produce one headscarf. Organically grown cotton is used in our non-binding knit caps.
Aprons: A new life as an apron
Aprons are partly made from retired uniforms that have returned to active use. ReTouch fabric used in the aprons contains over 10% fibre collected from discarded textiles. Recycling textile fibre reduces emissions from textile production and cuts water and energy consumption.
The aprons’ fabric is STeP by OEKO-TEX® certified.
“The positive environmental impact of a more sustainably made garment is multiplied many times over.”
